Dr. Weng's Tai-Chi Monkey System

Passages for the Student

There are 3 phases of study for the beginning and intermediate student.
  1. The Tai-Chi Monkey System
The Tai-Chi Monkey System is a set of exercises, materials, and teaching methods optimized for students new to Tai-chi. This system introduces basic concepts, footwork, had movements, breathing, and Tai-chi philosophy. Later, a set of traditional Tai-chi movements are used to build on these basic concepts. By the end of the program, all 13 of the foundational Tai-chi movements have been thoroughly covered as well as their martial arts applications in the context of Shuai-chiao and Chin-na.

The Tai-Chi Monkey System name derives from a short story about a persistent monkey. This story helps make memorization and recollection of the movements much easier.

  2. The Short Form
The short form comines the 13 foundational Tai-chi movements into a moving meditation that forms the basis for a lifetime of study and benefit. An outstanding introduction to the short form is provided in the Ch'ang Style Tai-Chi Chuan Modified Short Form Textbook and companion video.

  3. The Long Form
The long form extends the short form with several new movements and more complex patterns and applications. The long form applies Tai-Chi Monkey techniques and movements to Tai-chi's traditional pattern of movements and energy flow.

After studying the Tai-Chi Monkey System and short form, more experienced students will find the Ch'ang Style Tai-Chi Chuan Long Form videotape a great reference for progressing to this more advanced and challenging form.
